U Naymeinda became famous the world over, because photographs of his involvement in the Saffron Revolution appeared in the media. He is one of the two monks we often see in photographs with a loudspeaker. Together with U Thaura and U Gawsitha, he was one of the leading monks in the uprisings. Because of this, it was not safe in Burma anymore and he was forced to leave his country. He had to go into hiding for a long time and disrobed to put on layperson’s clothes. He managed to get to Thailand and has been living in Namti monastery, close to Mae Sot, for one year now. He is not happy at the moment. He wants to do something for his country and go back, or go to a third country as a refugee.

U Nandathiri (30): “We need you to give us advise”

The story of U Nandathir
Age: 30 years
From: Minbya Township in Arrakan State, Burma

U Nandathiri was 7 years old when he entered the monastery in Rangoon as a novice. He later moved to Mandalay. When he was 14 years old, he first got involved with political ideas and three years later, he was the leader of a Free Arrakan movement. They strived for an independent homeland for the Arrakan ethnic minority. He believes that although being politically active is not acceptable for a monk, being active for freedom in Arrakan state is. Being involved in a movement for freedom and peace is a good thing
